Best SERP API in 2026: Tested on Real SEO Work

By Irina Saprykina, working in SEO since 2006. Tested October 16-18, 2026. Last updated November 3, 2026.

I pay for DataForSEO and SerpApi myself and use both daily in my research. Bright Data was tested on trial credits, Serper.dev and SearchApi on their free tiers. No affiliate links, no sponsorship; no vendor saw this page before publishing.

What is the best SERP API?

For most SEO work, the best SERP API is DataForSEO. I ran the same 30 queries in 5 countries through 5 SERP APIs on October 16, 17 and 18, 2026 (prices checked November 3, 2026):

  1. DataForSEO - best for SEO at scale and rank tracking. 99% of my requests succeeded, only 2 of 119 responses were for the wrong query, and it is the only API I tested that returns a Google top 100 in one request ($0.011-0.016 per keyword).
  2. SerpApi - best for developers and parsed SERP features. It returned Google AI Overviews with their sources in 72% of requests, plus local packs and People Also Ask, with a median response of 2.9 seconds. 250 free searches a month.
  3. SearchApi - best for reliable, consistent results with full SERP features. 80 of 80 requests succeeded, its results were the closest to what the other APIs agreed on, and 100,000 searches a month cost $250 against $725 at SerpApi.
  4. Serper.dev - best value for AI agents that need Google organic results only. The fastest (2.8 seconds median) and the most stable from day to day, from $1 per 1,000 searches, but it returns only organic results and People Also Ask.
  5. Bright Data - best for researching what AI search sees from Google. ChatGPT's Google search reportedly runs on it, but in my test it failed a third of requests.

How I tested

I sent the same 30 Google queries through all five APIs: 15 in the US, 4 in the UK, 4 in Germany, 3 in Brazil and 4 in Serbia, in five languages. Seven queries were set to a city, and 10 were also run on mobile, so each test day had 40 requests per API. My script sent each query to all five APIs within about a minute, in random order, so the differences are between the APIs, not between hours. I repeated this on three days (SearchApi on two, because its free tier has 100 searches): 530 requests, every raw response saved.

Google has no single "correct" result list to compare with, so I used a consensus top 10: the URLs that at least half of the APIs returned in their top 10 for the same query at the same minute. For three Serbian queries I also checked Google in my own browser (private window, no VPN) at the same time.

I did not rate documentation or dashboards. I write all my API scripts with Claude Code, so I rarely read API docs myself; on the vendors' sites I only sign up, check usage and top up the balance. This review is about what the APIs return, how reliably, and at what cost. The query list and raw data are at the end of the page.

SERP API comparison table

API Best for Success rate Median / p90 response Wrong-query responses Consensus top 10 found AI Overview returned Top 100 per keyword Price per 1,000 searches (entry / at 100k a month) Tested on

SearchApi reliable results with full SERP features 100% 4.3 s / 8.8 s 1 of 80 77% 74% stopped after 6 pages $4 / $2.50 free tier
Serper.dev AI agents, Google organic only 99% 2.8 s / 3.7 s 0 of 90 71% never 10 requests $1 / $1 free tier
Bright Data AI search research 67% 15.3 s / 36.4 s 6 of 85 69% 65% not completed $1.50 (pay as you go) trial credits

Success rate: first attempts that returned results. Wrong-query responses: responses where most of the top 10 did not mention the query's main terms, because Google answered a looser query. Consensus top 10 found: the share of URLs that most APIs agreed on for the same query and minute that this API also returned. Prices: official pricing pages, November 3, 2026.

1. DataForSEO: best for SEO at scale and rank tracking

DataForSEO is the SERP API I use most, and the test showed why: 99% of requests succeeded and only 2 of 119 responses were for the wrong query. It is not the fastest (5.8 seconds median live), which rarely matters for SEO work.

Best for: rank tracking, bulk SEO data in a queue, and SEO workflows that also need backlink and keyword data. Not the best for: matching what a person in one country sees (it had the lowest overlap with the other APIs).

What I measured - Google top 100 in one request: 66-99 results in 12-20 seconds for $0.011-0.016 per keyword. Every other API needed 9-10 paged requests. - Standard queue ($0.60 per 1,000): results in a median of 80 seconds, at most 167 seconds, for 40 tasks; the priority queue ($1.20) was not faster at that load. - Google AI Overview in 72% of requests; 7 of 7 with its async AI Overview option. The pricing page lists that option at double the price, but my 7 responses showed the base price ($0.002). - It found 54% of the consensus top 10 (other APIs 68-77%), and on two of my three Serbian queries its top 10 shared nothing with what I saw in my own browser. A likely reason: for country-level queries DataForSEO still sends Google a precise location (uule), while the other APIs sent only the country.

What I like: I moved to DataForSEO when my SEO scripts needed more than search results. The same account gives me backlink data and other SEO datasets, so one API covers the whole workflow, and I pay only for what I use.

Downsides: search operators cost 5 times the base price, and both attempts of one failed site: query ("Internal SE Server Error") were still billed, $0.01 each.

Tested on a paid account, October 16-18, 2026. Price (checked November 3, 2026): pay as you go; $0.60 per 1,000 searches in the standard queue, $1.20 priority, $2 live; each extra 10 results costs one more base price.

2. SerpApi: best for developers and parsed SERP features

SerpApi returns the richest parsed Google results with the least work: AI Overviews with sources, People Also Ask, local packs, videos, shopping blocks and answer boxes, each in its own field. 99% of requests succeeded, with a median of 2.9 seconds.

Best for: developers and small projects that need parsed SERP features; starting for free. Not the best for: high volumes (the most expensive of the five at 100,000 searches a month) and SEO data beyond search results.

What I measured - Google AI Overview in 72% of requests, with 6-14 source links each. In 2 of 7 AI Overview test queries it first returned only a token and needed a second search for the text. - The most wrong-query responses: 14 of 120 (12%). "best running shoes for flat feet" returned an Instagram page of a band called FEET; "steuererklärung frist 2026" returned pages about "2026". Google caused this, not SerpApi's parser, but it reached my data. - A slow tail: 10% of requests took over 15.6 seconds.

What I like: SerpApi was the first SERP API I tried. Its free plan of 250 searches a month covered my first tasks completely, so I built and tested my scripts before paying anything.

Downsides: search results only (no backlink data, keyword volumes or other SEO metrics in its API list, October 2026), which is why I added DataForSEO later. A top 100 costs 9-10 searches. 100,000 searches a month cost $725, 12 times DataForSEO's standard queue.

Tested on a paid account, October 16-18, 2026. Price (checked November 3, 2026): free 250 searches a month; $25 for 1,000, $75 for 5,000, $150 for 15,000, $275 for 30,000, $725 for 100,000 a month (Best Effort speed). Failed searches are not counted, empty results are.

3. SearchApi: best for reliable, consistent results with full SERP features

SearchApi was the most reliable SERP API in my test: 80 of 80 requests succeeded, and it found 77% of the consensus top 10 (the URLs most APIs agreed on), more than any other API. It returns the same kinds of blocks as SerpApi, including Google AI Overviews and local packs, for about a third of SerpApi's price at volume.

Best for: reliable Google results with full SERP features at a mid-range price; a SerpApi alternative. Not the best for: deep rank tracking and queries with search operators.

What I measured - 100% success, median 4.3 seconds, 8.8 seconds at p90. - 1 wrong-query response in 80, and that one was the site: operator being ignored. - AI Overview in 74% of requests (10-14 sources each) and local packs on 88% of city queries, the highest shares in the test (with DataForSEO for local packs). - Top 100: Google stopped returning results after 6 pages (58 results) for my one test keyword.

Downsides: I tested it on the free tier only (89 of 100 searches), so I have no long-term experience. Plans are monthly, and use is limited to 20% of the plan per hour.

Tested on the free tier, October 16-18, 2026. Price (checked November 3, 2026): 100 free searches on signup; $40 a month for 10,000, $100 for 35,000, $250 for 100,000, $500 for 250,000; only successful responses are billed.

4. Serper.dev: best value for AI agents that need Google organic results only

Serper.dev was the fastest SERP API in the test (2.8 seconds median, 3.7 seconds at p90) and the most stable: from day 1 to day 3 its Google top 10 stayed 70% the same, against 28-40% for the others. It never returned a wrong-query response.

Best for: AI agents, chatbots and RAG apps that need Google's organic results fast and cheap. Not the best for: tracking SERP features, local or mobile results.

What I measured - Organic results and People Also Ask only: no AI Overview, local pack, video, shopping or answer box in any of my 90 requests. - It ignored the city: "plumber near me" set to Austin returned plumbers in Chattanooga, Tennessee. - A top 100 costs 10 credits (10 pages).

Downsides: no device (mobile) parameter that I could find, location by country and language rather than city, credits expire after 6 months.

Tested on the free tier (2,500 free searches, no card), October 16-18, 2026; 142 credits used. Price (checked November 3, 2026): $50 for 50,000 searches ($1 per 1,000), $375 for 500,000, $1,250 for 2.5 million, $3,750 for 12.5 million ($0.30 per 1,000).

5. Bright Data: best for researching what AI search sees from Google

According to Synscribe and RESONEO, Bright Data is the layer between ChatGPT's search and Google. I used it for exactly that: to check whether ChatGPT uses Google. In my study of ChatGPT's two search systems, 67% of ChatGPT's Google results were in Bright Data's top 10 for the same query (62% with SerpApi).

Best for: research into how AI search sees Google, and collection jobs where failed requests can simply be retried (failures are not billed). Not the best for: anything that needs every request to succeed the first time, or a top 100.

What I measured - Only 67% of requests succeeded on the first attempt (80 of 120). Failures came back as HTTP 200 with an empty body and Bright Data's own error in the headers: "No ready cookies", "redirect location was rejected", "waiting for selector #main failed", "google_captcha detected", "Proxy Error", "No free browsers in pool". - The slowest: 15.3 seconds median, 36.4 seconds at p90. - When it answered, its results were close to the others (69% of the consensus top 10), with AI Overviews in 65% of requests (3-7 sources each). - Top 100: none of my 5 test keywords completed.

Downsides: reliability in October 2026. The good part: failed requests were not billed (95 billed requests for 154 sent and 94 answered).

Tested on trial credits, October 2 and 16-18, 2026. Price (checked November 3, 2026): free 5,000 requests a month; $1.50 per 1,000 pay as you go; $499 a month for 380,000 ($1.30 per 1,000 above that); you pay only for successful requests.

Which SERP API is best for rank tracking?

DataForSEO is best for rank tracking because of depth. Since Google stopped supporting the num=100 parameter in September 2025 (Search Engine Journal), a top 100 means 10 result pages. DataForSEO returns them in one request ($0.011-0.016 and 12-20 seconds per keyword in my test); SerpApi and Serper.dev needed 9-10 requests and 23-40 seconds, SearchApi stopped after 6 pages, and Bright Data completed none. Its standard queue ($0.60 per 1,000 first-page searches) delivered in under 3 minutes in my test.

The city setting is not reliable in organic results with any of the five APIs: for "plumber near me" set to Chicago, all of them returned organic results from other US cities. The local pack was present with every API except Serper.dev.

What do 1,000 Google searches really cost with a SERP API?

List prices from the official pricing pages (checked November 3, 2026):

API Free Entry price 100,000 searches a month Top 100 for 1,000 keywords
DataForSEO not stated on the pricing page pay as you go $60 queue, $200 live $6 queue, $20 live
Serper.dev 2,500 searches once $50 for 50,000 $100 $10
Bright Data 5,000 requests a month $1.50 per 1,000 $150 $15
SearchApi 100 searches once $40 for 10,000 $250 $25
SerpApi 250 searches a month $25 for 1,000 $725 $72.50

The last column is my calculation: 1,000 keywords x 10 pages, or one request per keyword at DataForSEO (which refunds unused depth, so my real top-100 requests cost $0.011-0.016, not $0.02).

What my bills added to the list price: - Search operators: a site: query costs 5 times the base price at DataForSEO. - Failed requests: Bright Data did not bill its 60 failures. DataForSEO billed two failed site: requests. SearchApi counted one "Google didn't return any results" response, and SerpApi counted a follow-up that returned nothing. - AI Overviews: at SerpApi, 2 of 7 needed a second search. - My whole test used about $0.42 at DataForSEO, 181 SerpApi searches, 89 SearchApi searches, 142 Serper.dev credits and 95 Bright Data requests.

Do SERP APIs return the same Google results?

No. For the same query at the same minute, two of the five APIs shared only 20-47% of their Google top 10 on average. Part of the difference is how each API sets location and language, and part is Google itself.

The bigger issue is poisoned SERPs: since September 20, 2026, Google has been answering some automated requests with a normal-looking page for a looser query, according to Nozzle's analysis (8.0% of result pages since September 13, peak 27% on September 29; also covered by Search Engine Journal). I saw the same pattern in my test, usually Google answering one word of the query:

Wrong-query responses over three days: SerpApi 14 of 120, Bright Data 6 of 85, DataForSEO 2 of 119, SearchApi 1 of 80, Serper.dev 0 of 90. None had an error flag, so a script would store them as real rankings. If you track rankings, compare each SERP with the previous days before you trust a sudden drop.

Can a SERP API tell you whether a site is indexed in Bing?

Not reliably, in my experience. In July 2026 I tried to check Bing indexing through DataForSEO and SerpApi for a page-scoring tool, and dropped the check after a week:

For your own or a client's site, Bing Webmaster Tools' URL Inspection API answers the indexing question directly; it needs verified site ownership, so it doesn't work for competitors.
